If your kitchen cabinets are looking old and outdated, you don’t need to purchase new ones. Just refinish them! This easy process will give your kitchen a new updated look.

The first thing you will want to do is remove all cabinet doors and shelves. Once that is done. If the screws have some old paint on them you will want to make sure they are cleaned off.  Clean cabinets thoroughly making sure any grease remaining on the surfaces will interfere with refinishing. You can use Simple Green which is environmentally friendly to remove any deposits from yours hands or oils.

When you are done, sanding make sure to, wipe the wood with a tack cloth (to remove all dust particles) and let dry. If the finish you are working with is an oil base product, you may dampen a cloth with mineral spirits.

If you want to take the cabinets back to the original wood you can apply a clear varnish or polyurethane finish or stain previously painted cabinets. You will have to make sure all the paint is stripped off and this can take a much longer time. To do that you will need some type of paint stripper or mineral spirits to dissolve a wax finish. Many people use lacquer thinner that dissolves a lacquer, polyurethane, or shellac finish.

Once that is finished you will want to fill any old or chips with wood putty. Once the putty hardens you will want to sand it to create a smooth finish. Again, make sure to wipe it down with a tacky cloth to remove any particles.

Then choose your finish. You can re-stain your cabinets, put a natural gloss over them to seal or imagespaint. If you plan to use paint to refinish your , they will need to be primed first. The primer seals the wood, covering any blemishes, stains, knots, or anything else whose color might leech into the final paint coat. Once you have painted your cabinets you will want to seal them. Sealing them will ensure the paint lasts over the years. If you are re-varnishing kitchen or bathroom cabinets make sure you use a water repellent varnish such as a marine varnish.
