First what you will want to do is mark a center point. You will find and mark the center point on the wall measuring up 13″ the height of one row of tiles plus the grout line and draw a level line. These two lines will guide the initial tile installation. You will then apply mesh tape to the cement board seams to create a seamless pattern in your tiles. Make sure to spread a drop cloth over the shower pan and mask off the edge of the shower pan with painter’s tape.

After you have prepared your walls and floors of the shower you will want to mix and apply the tile adhesive. Use a drill with a paddle bit to mix the tile adhesive according to the manufacturer’s instructions. The adhesive should be about the consistency of cake frosting. You will need to use a 1/4″ x 1/4″ notched trowel to spread it over the first area that you want to be tiled. Hold the trowel at a 45-degree angle to spread the adhesive, then use the notched edge to leave grooves in the adhesive. These air pockets help the tile adhere better. Be sure not to spread too much at one time. You don’t want it to try out before you lay your tiles.

You are now ready to start laying your first tiles. Make sure to measure then mark the center of your first tile. Line the tile up with the reference lines on the cement board so that it’s flush with the horizontal line and centered on the vertical line. Press the tile into place. Make sure the adhesive grabs the tile. Then continue setting tiles, working out from the center. Use tile spacers to create even grout joints. Sponge any excess adhesive from the tiles during the installation to prevent it drying on tiles. You are finally ready to apply the grout once the adhesive has cured. Mix and apply grout then apply grout sealer after the grout is cured. You have now installed your first professional shower tiles!
