Wamtermark lights

Whether you’re talking about bathroom or kitchen lighting, make sure you choose the right fixtures for the job and that they are functional and create the look you really love.  Lighting can be traditional, modern, or a mixture of both depending on your needs and can be accomplished in a variety of ways, including floor lamps, ceiling lights, wall lights, and pendant lights, to name a few.  The lighting in both rooms can make smaller rooms look and seem bigger and larger rooms appear more intimate.  Use lights to illuminate small spaces and dimmers to help create the perfect mood.  Your choice of lights will allow you to see better and complete the task you are working on in each room.

For your bathroom, you can incorporate the following types of lighting: cabinet lighting, mirror and vanity lighting, ceiling fixture, shower lighting, bathtub lighting, canned lighting, toilet lighting, accent lighting, and indirect lighting.  In the kitchen, the following types of lighting are available: sink lighting, cabinet lighting, accent lighting, canned lighting, island lighting, kitchen nook lighting, wall sconces and ceiling fixtures, and pendant lighting.  To help you with your lighting jobs, please see the tips listed below.

Bathroom lighting jobs:

  1. Bathrooms need lots of even, shadow-free lighting for shaving, grooming, and makeup application.  For smaller bathrooms, to achieve this, use mirror lights and for larger bathrooms, add a ceiling light.
  2. For work area lights and accent lights, use wall-mounted fixtures.
  3. Use enclosed recessed lighting in the tub and shower enclosures, as well as over whirlpool baths and in spas.
  4. Fixtures with standard incandescent, xenon, LED or halogen bulbs behind glass globes provide the most flattering light for the bathroom.  Make sure you choose warm white tones.
  5. To better light your mirror and create a more even illumination on both sides of your face, use decorative wall bracket lights on both sides and/or mount one above the mirror.  Use only glare-free glass diffusers, ideally 36” apart or above the mirror and above eye level to avoid glare on the mirror.

Kitchen lighting jobs:

  1. Since your kitchen is primarily a work area but is also a gathering place, make sure the lighting is comfortable and functional.
  2. Ceiling lights with under-cabinet lights in the work area should be sufficient in a smaller kitchen.  Larger kitchens will allow for a combination of different light sources.
  3. To illuminate counters and island areas with higher levels of light, you can use recessed lighting and place them directly over the area to avoid creating shadows.
  4. Adding lights above the cabinets can brighten the ceiling or help to create a warm glow.
  5. For over islands or tables, you can use pendants or chandeliers to create work area light and ambient lighting.
  6. Use dimmers and lighting control systems to reduce power consumption and save you money on your energy bill.

The presentation of your bathroom and kitchen are an essential part of your home’s décor and the right lighting can highlight the room’s best features and provide optimum functionality.  Be creative when you’re designing or updating your current fixtures because, with the right lighting, you can create a sense of warmth and welcome, as well as sophistication to your home.
