Nothing says inviting like a cozy cottage kitchen. With these few easy tips, you can create the perfect space to make friends and family feel right at home.

Open and Airy

Do away with bulky cupboards.  Instead, consider placing open shelves where your upper cabinets would be.  Proudly display your dinnerware on these shelves.  If your dinnerware consists of mismatched items, that’s okay.  It only accentuates the cottage look.

Hardware

It’s amazing how a simple knob or cup pull can change the look of a space.  Installing reproduction antique cabinet hardware is an easy way to add cottage character to any kitchen.  Check out the selection of cup pulls at plumbtile.com.  Whether you are looking for something ornate or simple and rustic, there are plenty to choose from.

Island

Be creative with your kitchen island.  Re-purpose an old dresser, or add bun feet to the bottom corners or your existing island.

Add a touch of color with patterns

Fabric is a nice break from hard cabinetry to soften the room.  Don’t limit yourself to just window treatments. Adding a skirt below a farmhouse sink softens the look of the room, and still serves the purpose of concealing less attractive items, like cleaning supplies, that are stored beneath.

Painted cabinets

While white painted cabinets is usually the color of choice, feel free to try something different.  Paint lower and upper cabinets or shelves a different color, or consider leaving the cabinets white, and painting the island a duck egg blue.  When considering color choices, use lighter colors to keep that open airy feel.

Mix and Match

A lived-in feel is the whole idea of a cottage kitchen.  Feel free to mix and match items.  Quirky lighting is a perfect example.  The hanging fixture over the island, or the single pendant above the kitchen sink need not be from a matching set.
