So, you’ve decided that you want to install new tile for your kitchen, bathroom or any room, now what?  The first thing to keep in mind before you purchase the tile, is that the options are virtually endless.  Simply put, there’s something for everyone, for every style.  So, do some research and pick a style before you head to the store.  This way, you can make a more informed decision, and not become inundated by the numerous choices. The different styles, textures and patterns can make purchasing tile a difficult decision.  Here are a few tips to follow that will make your purchase a success:

Select the right tile for YOU – Not all tile is suitable for each area of your home. You don’t want a porous tile in a bathroom or kitchen because it will absorb water. Entryways need a hard, scratch-resistant tile. Tiles for an outdoor room require different specifications than indoors.  Think about where you are going to be placing the tile, and then you can better select the right type of tile.

Select the design of the tile – Again, it’s good to first consider the size of the room and its primary use.  Each tile has its own color and texture but you can customize your particular room with accent pieces such as trim work and decorative tiles.  Many styles of tile, ceramic in particular, are designed to look and feel like natural stone. That means they often contain a textured surface and color variations. Even if you select solid color tiles, you will still see shade variation from tile to tile. Each tile manufacturer should have samples telling you how much variation to expect.

Select Tile Type – Porcelain and ceramic tile is made from clay or other minerals. The extruded material is shaped and heat-treated in a kiln.  Clay tiles are then further treated in one of two ways, glazed and unglazed.  Glazed tile is slick, and has a glassy surface.  Glazed tiles are used mostly on walls or countertops, and they offer more color choices than unglazed. Glass tiles are becoming extremely popular because they are Eco-friendly and use a substance that used to end up in landfills.

There is also marble, which is characteristically soft and easily scratched or etched by acids and should be considered cautiously, and terrazzo, which is tone or marble chips embedded in cement make up a terrazzo floor. The polished surface makes a durable floor material.  of course there are other materials, like metal that are becoming a popular way for people to create a distinctly different look and feel in their home.

Ask Questions  – Before you make the final decision, you should ask a few last questions, such as how much maintenance will this tile require?  I’ve been told that tile is slippery when it gets wet. Is this true?  Will this tile be too cold and uncomfortable because it’s so hard? I have little kids and I’m worried that they might drop something and damage a tile. Is tile the right choice for me?
